SWIGGING, GAMBLING AND SWEARING

During the later part of the eighteenth century, ministers in Greensboro became extremely concerned about the prevalence of gambling, heavy drinking, card playing, reveling, swearing and cursing. Revival meetings, offering spiritual “refreshing,” were common occurrences and usually concluded with manifestation of spiritual blessings. At one service, according to William Paisley of Cross Roads Church, when no obvious blessings had come to the congregation, one parishioner stood up and said in a calm but earnest voice, “Stand still and see the salvation of God!” This is what happened next:

In five minutes, more or less, scores were crying for mercy. Many were struck down, or thrown in to a state of helplessness if not of insensibility…Bating [sic] the miraculous attestations from Heaven, such as cloven tongues like fire and the power of speaking different languages, it was like a day of Pentacost and none was careless or indifferent…so deeply were the people absorbed…that they could not be got away from the place until the shades of evening had closed around them.
